Alphabet Walk
Letter recognition
Scatter letter cards or die-cut letters in the center of your circle-time area. Then lead youngsters in singing the “Alphabet Song” as they walk around the letters. When the song ends, invite a child to pick up a letter. Sing the song a second time, encouraging each child to hold up his letter when it is named in the song. Have students return the letters and play another round.

Leprechaun's Gold
Number recognition
Send your wee ones on a hunt for gold that will also sharpen their number-identification skills! In advance, make a supply of gold coins by cutting circles from yellow tagboard; then label each coin with a number from 1 to 10. Scatter the coins throughout your classroom. Sit at the front of the room with a pot and teach youngsters the following chant. Then send them hunting for gold! When a child brings you a coin, ask her to identify the number on it before adding it to the class collection.
Leprechaun, leprechaun, I've been told Hiding in our room are coins of gold! Find them, find them, quick as can be. Put them in the pot for you and me!
