Two-Sided Trees
This art project is a great avenue for explaining why leaves change colors in the fall! Give each youngster a large white tree cutout. Instruct her to use a brown marker to color the tree trunk. Then have her use green paint to make sponge prints on the treetop.
After the paint dries, tell students that the chlorophyll in a tree’s leaves helps make food for the tree and makes the leaves green. Explain that as the tree gets ready to rest for the winter, the chlorophyll fades away. Guide students to realize that the green color disappears as this happens. Explain that the leaves then show colors (red, orange, and yellow) that the green color had hidden. Next, have each youngster color the trunk on the blank side of her tree. Then ask her to make fall-colored paint prints on the treetop. The result will be a handy reminder of what she learned about leaves!

Hoot! Hoot!
Transforming a brown paper lunch bag into a roly-poly owl is easy and fun! Open the lunch bag and stuff the bag half full of crumpled newspaper. Then fold down the top of the bag and staple along the fold. Next, color a black dot (pupil) near the center of each of two 2-inch white construction paper circles. Glue each circle inside a cupcake liner. Glue the liners to the front of the folded flap and glue one edge of an orange construction paper triangle to the back of the flap to make a beak. There you have it! A cute-as-a-button bird!
