Listen and Learn
Spelling, using technology
Rekindle students’ interest in spelling by using podcasts!
Directions:
- Set up a podcast for your classroom. (Podcast apps are available for free online.) Record the week’s spelling words and dictation sentences into the podcast. If you use multiple lists to differentiate spelling instruction, name each list and note for your records which students will access each list.
- Give each student a copy of the spelling list. Show students how to access the podcast on a computer or tablet. For a spelling center, direct each child to look at the list as he listens to the podcast. Then have the student use the words from the podcast to complete a desired spelling activity. Share the podcast link with students’ parents so students can practice at home.
- On the day of the spelling test, have students access the podcast. Direct each student to move through the podcast at his own pace as he writes each word on a sheet of paper, pausing the podcast if he needs more time.

Measurement Mats
Linear measurement
Size up measurement skills with these colorful mats. To make a mat, a child cuts construction paper strips of different lengths and colors. She glues the strips onto a 9” x 12” sheet of black construction paper. Next, she lists the colors on a sheet of blank paper. She measures each strip to the nearest inch and writes the length beside the corresponding color word. Then she measures each strip to the nearest centimeter and writes this length beside the standard unit of measure for the same strip. When she has two measurements for every strip, she studies the measurements and writes to explain how the centimeter and inch measurements relate to the size of one centimeter and one inch.
