Constructing Comparisons
Comparing stories
This version of a Venn diagram is a perfect tool for building comprehension. Gather The Three Little Pigs by Paul Galdone or another traditional version of the story and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! by Jon Scieszka. On a large sheet of paper, draw and title three houses, as shown, to create a poster. After you read both books to students, display the poster. Have students name characteristics that the books share and characteristics that are unique to each book. Write the information on the corresponding houses. After you recap the information, poll students to find out which book they prefer and why. For more advanced students, have each youngster complete his own house-themed Venn diagram.

Key ideas and details
Train your students to be reading winners! Copy a bookmark for each child and allow him to color it. When students read a story, have them refer to the bookmark and answer the questions. To extend the activity, assign a question for students to write a written response to in their reading journals.
