Descriptive Drawing
Adjectives
Students draw and describe pictures to emphasize using good adjectives. A child draws and colors a picture of her choice. She identifies adjectives that apply to her illustration and uses them to write a description of her picture. When her description is complete, she underlines the adjectives used, counts them, and records the number on her paper.

Surface Size
Area
Prepare a few simple materials, and this step-by-step center is ready to use! Print the rectangles and the activity card. Put the card in plastic page protector. Set out the card and rectangles with a supply of one-inch tiles. A child follows the steps on the card to complete the activity on her own paper. To extend the activity, have the child explain the relationship between the number of tiles used on each rectangle and its corresponding multiplication equation.

Sweet 16
Decoding words
To make a game of reading review, lead each child to fold and unfold a sheet of paper to make a 16-section grid. Next, have students refer to your word wall or a word list to write a different word in each section. After students have their grids filled, say a word and have the child try to locate it on his grid. If he has the word, he circles it. The first student who circles four words across, down, or diagonally reads his words aloud. If all four words match the words you called out, give him the chance to lead the game.
Tip: Save paper by having each student draw his grid on a whiteboard instead.
