What It Is or What It Could Be
Descriptive writing
Have students brainstorm their way to better writing! In advance, write a short story. Use the same word to describe the subject throughout the story. Also post a T chart and label it as shown. Display the story and then read it aloud to students. As a class, identify the subject and then count the number of times the same word was used to describe it. Next, ask students, “We know what it is, but what could it be?” Write their responses on the chart. For instance, if the subject is a cat, suggestions might include furry feline, playful pet, green-eyed friend, or cuddly playmate. Then revise your story, including students’ suggestions where possible. Afterward, have each child repeat the process with a recently written story.
