Addressing the Issue
Developing story events
Engaging picture cards help student pairs practice planning solutions to potential story problems. To begin, remind students that a good story has a problem (or conflict) and a solution (or resolution). Pair students; then project one of the provided picture cards onto the board. Next, have each pair discuss the problem that appears on the picture card and guide each student to write the problem at the top of a sheet of paper. Then have each duo discuss possible solutions to the problem, listing those ideas on their papers below the problem. After students have had sufficient discussion time, provide time for each child to use her list to write a corresponding story.

Who will operate?
Word problems
Get ready to use this fun idea stat! To prepare, display a word problem and draw on the board a plus and minus sign (second grade), a multiplication and division sign (third grade), or all four signs (third grade). Read the problem aloud and give a student a toy stethoscope to wear. Direct the child to place the stethoscope on the operation he would use to solve the problem and explain how he would do so. If the problem has more than one step, have him place the stethoscope on the sign for the first step and explain before moving to the sign for the second step. Get the rest of the class involved by having each child give a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down in response to each of the student's choices. To vary the activity, write possible answers on the board instead and have the student place the stethoscope on the correct one.
