Alike and Different
Describing and comparing characters
A child folds a sheet of paper in half vertically. Then he makes two equally spaced cuts in the top layer. On each of the first two resulting flaps, he writes the name of a different character from a familiar book. Under each flap, he writes phrases that describe the character. On the last flap, he writes both characters' names. Then he lifts the flap and writes sentences that explain how the characters are alike and how they are different. Finally, he draws an illustration on each flap.

Sounds Good!
Revising
To help your young authors correct or improve their writing, post the revising chart where students can easily see it. When students read their drafts aloud, direct their classmates to refer to the poster to provide compliments or offer suggestions for improving how the writing sounds. As an alternative, prepare a chart titled “Stories That Look Good” to help students edit for conventions as they review their writing or their peers’ writing.

Anything but Boring
Solving word problems
Forget about the same old word problem review—students are sure to love this practice activity! First, make a class supply of the word problem cards. (There is a grade 2 and a grade 3 version provided.) Instruct each student to fill in the blanks on a card and then glue the problem to the top of a sheet of paper. Next, put students into groups of three and direct them to sit in a circle. At your signal, have each child pass his paper to the student on his right. The student solves her classmate's problem. At your next signal, have each student pass the paper again. This time, each child reads and checks the new problem she is holding. Finally, direct students to pass the papers back to their original owners.
