Hi Teacher,
Here are a few new ideas for your lesson plans.
- A shared research activity and writing project
- An activity that gives students practice rounding to the nearest 10
- A step-by-step center to reinforce nonliteral language
Have a great week.

Group Research
Shared research
Try this group approach to writing reports! Divide students into groups of three or four. Give each group factual reading material about a chosen animal. Assign each group member a different category of information, such as food or habitat. Have each child read about his assigned topic and jot information on a large sticky note or index card. Then have the group members attach the sticky notes or cards to a paper strip in the order in which they would like to present the information in their report. Then have each child refer to the strip as he writes a report.

What's In Your Cart?
Rounding to the nearest 10
To prepare this partner activity, make copies of the receipt patterns and cut them apart so that each duo will have one receipt. Using the values on the receipt, instruct one child in each pair to calculate the actual cost of the items. Have the other student round the prices to the nearest ten and find the estimated sum. Direct each student to share and compare his results with his partner. If desired, have each duo exchange its receipt with another student pair, switch roles, and complete again. Then lead students in a discussion of real-world implications of estimating costs.

A Way With Words
Nonliteral language
Print and then project the step-by-step center directions on the board. Instruct each student to use a current reading to complete the activity at his seat. Or put the directions sheet in a plastic page protector and place it at a literacy center. Set out a supply of figurative language–rich books (see the list below to get started) and have the student choose one to complete the center.
