Hi Teacher,
These activities are just what you need to reinforce skills this week.
- A student-made center to review prefixes and suffixes
- A Thanksgiving-themed activity that gives students practice solving multiplication word problems
- An activity that encourages students to share their opinions about recently read books
All the best.

Puzzle it out
Prefixes and suffixes
Give each child a pair of matching puzzles pieces and direct her to write a prefix on the left piece and a base word on the right piece or write a base word on the left piece and a suffix on the right piece. Place the puzzle pieces at a center along with blank paper and pencils. A child matches puzzle pieces to make words. She reads the words she made, lists them on a sheet of paper, and then writes or draws to show each word’s meaning.
Tip: Use pieces that match but come from a puzzle that can’t be completely assembled.

Preparing Plates
Multiplication word problems
Serve each student a personalized helping of math practice. To start, each child draws on a paper plate a Thanksgiving Day meal that includes three different foods. Next, the student completes the recording sheet, showing how many items would be needed to fill ten plates. Then she refers to each table to write and solve one word problem for each food.
Tip: Have students cut images from store circulars and glue the cutouts on their plates instead of drawing.

Two Thumbs-Up?
Expressing an opinion about a book
Who do students trust when it comes to book recommendations? Their classmates, of course! Place a supply of sticky notes in an easily accessible location. When a student completes a book from the classroom library, she jots down comments about the story on a sticky note, being careful not to reveal the conclusion. After she signs her name, she adheres the comment inside the front cover and then returns the book to its original location. Now students can use their peers’ comments to help decide which books are right for them!
