On a Roll
Compound and complex sentences
Review writing compound and complex sentences with this quick-to-prepare idea. Begin by having students brainstorm a list of six topics. Number the topics, and give each group of students a die. One student in each group rolls the die to determine the topic. Then he rolls the die again. If he rolls an odd number, each student writes a compound sentence about the topic. If he rolls an even number, each child writes a complex sentence. When all students have written their sentences, they pass their papers to the right for peer editing. Afterward, everyone returns the papers to their owners and repeats the steps until time is up. This quick activity also is a fun way to practice writing facts and opinions or causes and effects.

Measuring and Matching
Measurement
Matching these cards to yarn lengths gives your students great measurement practice! To prepare the center, give each child an index card, a length of yarn (shorter than 36 inches), scissors, and access to a yardstick. Direct the child to measure his yarn and cut it to a desired length, helping him measure to the nearest inch. Next, have the child write the measurement on his index card. Collect the cards and yarn lengths and display them at a center, along with the yardstick. Instruct each child who visits the center to use the yardstick to match each yarn length to an index card. Then have him choose a partner to check his work.

Poppin' Good
Pronouns
Looking for anchor-chart inspiration? Check out these attention grabbers! In advance, print the popcorn patterns. Use student input as you record important information about pronouns (reflexive or the function of) beside and below the popcorn container. Add examples of pronouns above the container on popcorn cutouts. Post the chart as a ready reference for students.
