A Case for Alike and Different
Informative writing
Set students’ sights on comparing and contrasting with this writing center. In advance, designate one shelf, display case, or area in your room as the compare-and-contrast case. Place in that area objects or pictures that you want students to examine. Also set books on those topics nearby. For example, place two stuffed animals in the space: a dog and a cat. Then put informational books near the display space about dogs and cats. A child draws and labels a Venn diagram with the topics and then reviews the books. Using facts from the texts, he completes the Venn diagram. Later, he uses the Venn diagram to write an informational piece that compares and contrasts the topics.

Mmmm…Math!
Modeling numbers
Make hands-on learning even more engaging with edible base ten manipulatives. Give students individual saltine crackers to use as hundred flats, pretzel sticks to use as ten longs, and mini chocolate chips to use as one units. Also, give each child a copy of the provided place value chart. Announce or display a number less than 1,000; then lead students to model the number with the manipulatives on the chart. When practice time is up, invite your mathematicians to nibble on their manipulatives.
To extend the activity, challenge students to create subtraction problems based on what they eat.

Flyswatter Frenzy
Guide words
In advance, draw four flies on the board as shown. Write a different pair of guide words under each fly. Next, make a list of 20 to 25 words that fit between the guide word pairs and then write each listed word on a different index card. To play the game, divide the class into two teams. Have one member from each team stand in front of the board, each holding a flyswatter. Read the word on one index card and direct each player to use her flyswatter to swat the fly above the matching guide words. Award one point to the first player to swat the correct fly. Direct each player to give her flyswatter to a fellow team member, and continue the game as time allows.
