Story Similarities
Comparing stories
This variation of a Venn diagram is fit for a king! Share two versions of a chosen fairy tale with students. Then draw on a large sheet of paper a castle like the one shown. Write the title of the story above the castle. Title the middle section of the castle "Both" and label a separate section of the castle for each book. Then ask students to name various story details and identify the sections in which they belong. Write the information on the poster. After the poster is complete, ask students which book they prefer and why.

Place Value Pairs
Interpret place value
To prepare for this place value game, draw a 4 x 5 grid on a full sheet of paper. Program each of ten grid spaces (cards) with a three-digit number. Underline one digit per number. For the remaining cards, write the value of each underlined digit.
Next, have each pair of students cut a tagboard copy of the cards apart and store the cards in a resealable plastic bag. To play, partners arrange the cards facedown on a playing surface. To take a turn, a player flips two cards. If the cards match, he keeps them and takes another turn. If they do not, he flips them over and his turn ends. Play alternates until all the cards are used. The player with more cards wins.

A New Kind of Word Search
Multiple-meaning words
Provide sticky notes. Then guide each student who recognizes a word with more than one meaning to copy the sentence containing the word onto a sticky note. At the end of each reading session, ask each volunteer to read her example aloud and share how the sentence helps her understand the word's meaning.
