Knowing Their Way Around
Capitalization
This handy tool provides plenty of opportunities for practicing new capitalization rules. In advance, make a tagboard copy of the circle pattern for each child. Direct each student to complete the title as shown, cut out the circle, and snip the lines between the letters. Then challenge him to write a holiday, product name, or geographic place for each letter on the circle. When he writes the word for a capital letter, he folds the flap over. After students have completed their circles, provide time for each child to share an example. To vary the activity, challenge students to use the letters on the circle to compile lists of irregular verbs.

Math Mind Builders
Skill review
Give each student a copy of "Math Mind Builders" to work on during free time. Or, to use it as morning work or a math warm-up activity, project a copy of the page and color the number of each task you want students to complete.

Spark some interest
Writing imagined narratives
Lead students to a better understanding of narrative writing. Print the mini poster and project it onto the board. Use it as a reference during a mini lesson. Or put the mini poster in a page protector and place it at a writing center for students to refer to when writing independently. Then, after students complete an imagined narrative piece, guide each child to use a copy of the grade-appropriate rubric to edit her work.
