Focus on the Big Picture
Asking questions
Set students on course to asking text questions with this small-group activity. In advance, take close-up pictures of objects around your school, such as part of a railing, a portion of a playground structure, or a computer mouse. Print the pictures and give one to each small group. Instruct students to write four questions they might ask to help them figure out what the object in the picture is. Provide time for each group to share its questions; then lead a discussion of which questions would lead to more detailed responses and which would provide short answers. Then, if time allows, take students on a quick walk to show them the objects photographed.

Let Your Feelings Show
Revising
Help students write to show details instead of telling the details. First, on the board, write the simple sentence shown. Explain that the sentence tells how Lisa feels, but you want it revised to show that Lisa is happy. Have the class name ways people show they are happy, as well as events that might make people happy, as you list them on the board. Model how to rewrite the original sentence to show Lisa's feelings. To extend the activity, give each pair of students a simple telling sentence and have each duo rewrite its sentence to show instead of tell. Then remind students to apply this approach to their independent writing assignments.
